Jahrome Hughes forced to miss Cameron Munster's father's funeral after horror shoulder injury
Melbourne star Jahrome Hughes was heartbreakingly forced to miss the funeral of his close friend and teammate Cameron Munster's father because he was not allowed to travel after picking up a shoulder injury on Thursday night. Hughes left the field just minutes into the second half of Melbourne's gutsy 34-30 win over the Roosters with the club confirming immediately that he'd dislocated his shoulder after landing awkwardly while making a tackle on James Tedesco. The reigning Dally M Medal winner was in agony and had to be helped off Allianz Stadium, with Melbourne's medical staff unable to put it back in, and he was sent to the hospital needing extreme pain medication. Hughes made it back to the team hotel in the early hours of Friday morning and luckily escaped needing surgery, but will miss around six weeks of action. But the hammer blow came in the early hours of Friday morning when Hughes was informed the injury meant he wasn't clear to fly to Queensland to be by Munster's side as he bid farewell to his father Steve. The Maroons star didn't play on Thursday night because it would have been too difficult to get back to Queensland for the funeral on Friday. However, some players and staff caught a flight up to Rockhampton at 6am on Friday so they could attend the funeral. Hughes originally planned to be on that flight, however, Melbourne chief Frank Ponissi said the Kiwi wasn't cleared to fly due to his shoulder. 'He said Jahrome got back to the hotel last night. They finally put the shoulder back in place in the hospital without too many issues,' journalist Andrew Webster told SEN, reading out Ponissi's text message to him. 'At this stage, it is very difficult to assess, although the initial scans show nothing too sinister. He was coming up to Munster's father's funeral this morning with a few of us, but instead will now head straight back to Melbourne with the team, where they will assess him.' Steve Munster died on the eve of State of Origin 3, and Cameron bravely played just days later, lifting the Maroons to a memorable series win.

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson concedes mistake in Chad Townsend selection, recalls Sandon Smith
The Sydney Roosters will have to push for a finals berth without hardman Victor Radley as coach Trent Robinson confirmed he'd miss a month with a shoulder injury starting with Thursday's must-win clash against the Storm. Robinson has recalled playmaker Sandon Smith to team-up with close mate Sam Walker after conceding his decision to bring back veteran Chad Townsend 'didn't work out' in what could prove a costly loss to Cronulla last week. Sitting in 10th, and needing every win possible in the run to the finals, Robinson said Smith had been given a clear message on what was expected after his recall adamant he had 'full belief' in the 22-year-old despite choosing Townsend ahead of him last week. 'It didn't work out how we wanted last week,' Robinson conceded. 'But I've also been clear about what I'd like from him and his improvement. I pulled him out of the reserve grade game last week, he's had a good week of training. 'But there's two separate things there. We weren't happy with the way we played, but also, Sandon wasn't there for a reason. 'But we've always believed in him as a player. I think we've shown that for the last few years in his development. But I know he can get better and have belief in him he can do that tomorrow night.' Robinson hoped Smith's connection with 23-year-old halfback Walker would work in the Roosters favour against a Storm team smarting from it's own home loss to Manly. It's just the second time the young playmakers will start together in the halves for the Roosters. 'I trust our system and I also trust their combination as friends and an intuition there about how they like playing the game,' he said. 'I want him to play his game, I want him to attack the game. Go and play, go and attack the line and take his opportunities. 'He's a really instinctive player and I feel like he can do that more. I'm looking forward to that.' 'We've put him in for big games in the past, and he's in, and we want him to go after it.' Robinson hopes Radley could be return in the back-end of the regular season after succumbing to a shoulder injury the star forward played down earlier this week. '(Radley's injury) is not a week, it's probably closer to three or four. We've just got to repair and do the work,' he said. 'It's been a bit stop-start there. It'd be nice to get him back and firing.'

Will Levis criticized by ex-Titans star after shoulder surgery rules him out of 2025 NFL season
A former Titans star has been left puzzled by Will Levis' decision to undergo season-ending shoulder injury on the first day of training camp. Levis initially sprained his AC joint in Week 4 vs. the Dolphins last year before returning to the field after the Titans' Week 5 bye. The quarterback later sat from Weeks 7 to 9 but ultimately finished a difficult season under center with 12 starts. He later participated in OTAs and minicamp this offseason. However, Levis has now elected to undergo surgery on his shoulder issue, and former Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan couldn't quite understand the timing of the move. 'I'm sure there's a side to the story that explains why Will waited until late July to get this surgery,' he wrote on X. 'Unfortunately, im too dumb to figure out what that is.' The Titans announced on their website that Levis' surgery was set for Tuesday - which is also the first day of their training camp - and released a statement in support of the young passer. 'After consulting with doctors and his representatives, Will Levis has decided to undergo shoulder surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2025 season. We support his decision to focus on his long-term health,' the team said. 'He approached the offseason with professionalism and showed clear growth as a leader. We remain confident in his full recovery.' Citing an anonymous source, ESPN reported that Levis experienced discomfort during minicamp before starting to look into his medical options. He had reportedly hoped before that the injury would heal itself with rest and rehab. Levis also spoke in May about 'relearning his stroke' with personal quarterback coach Jordan Palmer, whom he worked with in California. While Ward - the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft - was always expected to be the team's starter - Levis' surgery leaves the team thin behind him. Tim Boyle and Brandon Allen have limited experience starting, though Allen produced a respectable 199-yard, one touchdown, one interception start for the 49ers last year. Allen has 10 career stats, while Boyle has just five. At what was likely less than full health, Levis struggled last season in his sophomore campaign. He posted just a 2-10 record under center and turned the ball over 18 times (six fumbles, 12 interceptions) while throwing 13 touchdowns.

Thursday's briefing: Jude undergoes op as Lionesses prepare for Euros last eight
Jude Bellingham has gone under the knife to repair a long-standing shoulder injury. The Lionesses are preparing for their Euro 2025 quarter-final with Sweden, while Crystal Palace are hopeful for a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) intervention on their European demotion. Bellingham goes under the knife Real Madrid and England midfielder Bellingham has undergone shoulder surgery. It was reported in May that Bellingham would have an operation following this summer's Club World Cup and on Wednesday, Real confirmed the procedure had taken place to treat a recurring dislocation of his left shoulder. The surgery is reportedly set to sideline him until October, but the Spanish club did not confirm any length of absence, saying only that Bellingham would now 'begin a period of rehabilitation prior to his return to recovery work'. Bellingham is now set to miss the start of Real's LaLiga campaign and also England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia in September. Bronze calls for underdog mentality Lucy Bronze urged defending champions England to draw on the underdog mentality buried deep in their DNA when they kick off their Euro 2025 quarter-final with Sweden in Zurich. 'We said we're a 'new England', a new team,' said Bronze. 'And what was meant by that was, we had a lot of younger players and new players who have very different experiences of playing for England compared to the likes of myself, where we know that England used to have to dig deep all the time, always. 'Like, 2015 was the first time we beat Germany – that's insane to think of right now. 'But England in the past, it was you have to dig out performances and you are maybe the underdog, you aren't the favourite. Whereas this England team has developed and changed.' Parish praying for Palace redemption Crystal Palace will mount a legal challenge to UEFA's decision to exclude them from next season's Europa League, with chairman Steve Parish announcing the club would appeal to CAS. The FA Cup winners have been demoted to the Conference League owing to what Europe's governing body says is a conflict of interest regarding former director and co-owner John Textor, who also owns part of Ligue 1 side Lyon. 'We are still fighting,' Parish told the The Rest is Football podcast. 'There's an appeal process, so we go to CAS which is the court for arbitration and, you know, we're very hopeful. We think we've got great legal arguments. 'We don't think this is the right decision by any means. We know unequivocally that John didn't have decisive influence over the club. 'We know we proved that beyond all reasonable doubt because it's a fact.' Girelli sends Italy through Cristiana Girelli's 90th-minute winner sent Italy through to the semi-finals of Euro 2025 after a 2-1 victory over Norway. Extra-time was looming after Girelli's second-half opener had been cancelled out by Norway's Ada Hegerberg, who had earlier missed a penalty. But Italy's captain stood up when her side needed her to power home a header from Guro Reiten's cross to book their last-four spot, where they will meet either Sweden or England. What's on today England continue their assault on Euro 2025 with a tough-looking quarter-final against Sweden, hoping to build on explosive group wins against the Netherlands and Wales. Elsewhere, Welsh clubs Haverfordwest and Penybont, Northern Irish side Cliftonville and Irish Premier Division outfit St Patrick's Athletic are in Europa Conference League qualifying action.

Real Madrid star to undergo surgery on Tuesday
A member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has been pencilled in for a surgical procedure on Tuesday. That's according to journalist Alberto Pereiro of Onda Cero, who point towards Jude Bellingham as the player in question. Advertisement Bellingham, for his part, has long been playing whilst some way short of full fitness. This comes owing to a shoulder injury, which has seen the England international suffer a series of relapses over the course of the last 18 months. When taking to the pitch, Bellingham sports heavy padding on the shoulder in question, no doubt hampering his mobility to at least some degree. The decision, in turn, had long been made for the 21-year-old to undergo a surgical procedure upon the conclusion of Real Madrid's campaign at the Club World Cup. The exact date for as much, until now, had remained unclear. As alluded to above, though, on Tuesday, confirmation has arrived courtesy of Onda Cero that: Advertisement 'Bellingham undergoes surgery today in London.' Conor Laird – GSFN
